So how do we get to a quality of water that is beneficial to our health. In some states they have clean mountain fresh springs and in others like our home here in Texas we need to "soften" ours. Usually through a heavy duty process called Ion exchange.
The softening process is essentially a chemical trade. Since opposites attract, the mineral ions in your water swap places with safer ions on the resin. Because the resin is coated with sodium or potassium have a lesser positive charge than heavy minerals like calcium, iron, magnesium; they physically knock the lesser charged particles and get stuck in the resin.
The water will come from your city tap or well to the softener tank witch holds the resin. The tanks have internal pipes that direct the flow of water throughout the resin before taking it to the carbon tank.
